Chapter 24

Nemo made his way down the tunnel. The cloth bag containing the food bags and water bottles was slung over his shoulder; the cardboard container with the shake in one hand. He had already finished his shake on his walk from the restaurant to the apartment building.

He had studied the guard’s movements a number of times and knew he didn’t make his rounds until after nine o’clock at night. With the money Tonto had given him Nemo had purchased four bottles of water.

The walk to the door didn’t seem to take as long as before. Probably because there were so many things going through his head about Grizzly, the guard, Tonto, his mother. Shouldn’t there be a funeral? What happens to her body? Is she left in one of those cemeteries where nameless people go? Will anyone say words over her gravesite?

He reached the end, set down the bag and drink, and slowly tugged the door open. Still couldn’t be too careful. From the times he had been in this basement, he had only seen the one guard, so he knew there wasn’t a day shift, which was puzzling. He had a feeling whatever the guard was doing to the patient wasn’t something his bosses knew about.

Nemo grabbed his belongings and let the door close behind him. As usual, the lights were on in the cafeteria and hallway leading to the elevator. The guard obviously didn’t care about wasting electricity. Nemo switched on his flashlight and, as before, crept past the bars to the opening to Grizzly’s cell. There was a scraping sound, like metal hitting concrete. Grizzly was at the far side of the cell using a chain link to scratch something on the wall. He stepped back as the beam from Nemo’s flashlight touched his bare feet.

“Hey, Grizzly Adams,” Nemo whispered.

The man shuffled back against the wall. He studied Nemo through a veil of hair as the boy approached, then quickly turned his head. “The light,” he rasped. “It hurts my eyes.”

“But how can you see?”

“I can see in the dark.”

“You can? Like a vampire?” Nemo lowered the light, but it played across the man’s legs. “You look like Grizzly Adams. That was a good show.” Grizzly shielded his eyes as he studied Nemo. “Why does he keep you in the dark? And why does he hurt you like that?”

The man looked at the burn marks on his chest and the scars on his arms as though seeing them for the first time. “Don’t remember how I got them.” He shuffled over to the mattress and sat down.

The light settled on the dog collar around the man’s neck prompting Grizzly to cover his eyes with one hand. “Does that hurt? You’ve got blood on your neck.”

There was more than blood. Nemo could see stuff oozing from sores where the collar scraped. “Why do they keep you down here?”

Grizzly blinked several times, then shook his head. “Don’t know. Can’t remember.”

“Maybe it’s the medicine the guard puts in your water.
